A VICAR at the centre of a row over his former choirmaster today told the Evening Press why he had to quit his strife-torn church.
The Rev Philip Evans, vicar of St James's Church, Wetherby, said he had to go because parishioners had "lost all trust and respect" in the parochial church council, which he heads as vicar.
The church has been in turmoil since the resignation of choirmaster Stephen Hartley, from York, who claims Mr Evans forced him out because he lives out of wedlock with his partner, Joyce.
Mr Evans took almost three months sick leave after receiving death threats.
His surprise decision to leave, and the news that the churchwardens are to resign, was broken to parishioners by the Archdeacon of Richmond, the Ven Ken Good, at the end of yesterday's packed morning service.
He said: "Due to the stress he has incurred over the past few weeks, your vicar is on compassionate leave to have immediate affect and will be seeking a new appointment."
Mr Evans today told the Evening Press: "Wednesday night's vote of no confidence in the churchwardens and the PCC used a phrase that the majority of parishioners had lost all trust and respect for the churchwardens and PCC.
"When you are told by people who are your brothers and sisters in Christ that they've lost all trust and respect for you I think there's no alternative but to see there's a great difference and go your separate ways."
Choirmaster Stephen Hartley is applying to be reinstated at the church.
He said: "I hope the parish will be able to return to normal and put these things behind them. I would be delighted if they asked me to go back."
Choir member Jonathan Hunt, 72, said: "The atmosphere in the vestry was relief all round. I'm still sure that it was God's will that the vicar came here. If his work here is done then so be it, but there is still much to be done."
Pat Tatterton, 72, who has been at the church for 35 years, broke down in tears.
She said: "I feel ashamed and upset. Philip has been persecuted. I had hoped that he had the strength of character to carry on but a human soul can only take so much.
"I don't think I will be able to come back here."
But parishioner Lance Graham said: "I'm pleased he has decided to leave because of the way he has treated the choirmaster."
