Harrogate policeman Steve Smales (Peter Read Racing) confirmed his superiority in the season long Sports City Online cycle racing league with yet another win in the latest round of the 2000 series.
He covered the ten mile course on the Old Great North Road east of Knaresborough in 22min 46sec to claim his ninth maximum 50 points, and with a rider having to complete nine mandatory qualifying rides to count overall he cannot now be beaten in the championship title race.
Riding into second place in this latest encounter was Boroughbridge teacher Mark Cramoys (York Cycleworks), just ten seconds slower on 22.56, while Harrogate's Mike Shacklock (Otley CC) showed he has no intentions of slowing up with a fine third place ride of 23.12 to endorse his lead in the veterans' points competition.
Tockwith's Jim Lee (Knaresborough RT) took fourth place on 24.39 with clubmates Peter Mason (24.50) and Bagby's Walter Busuttil (24.52) fifth and sixth place.
York veterans John Clarke and Jim Laycock, both riding for Knaresborough RT, clocked 25.07 and 25.59 respectively, while once again two of the area's leading juniors had their usual close battle for the points on offer.
Wetherby's David Young collected 39 points with his 26.16 ride, leaving clubmate Oliver Pearce (Knaresborough RT) to salvage 38 points in 26.44.
The Ackrill League continued with a ten mile TT on the new A19 based course between Thirsk and Knayton, using the Thirsk bypass.
Nick Green proved fastest, taking the 40 maximum points on offer with a 21.46 ride that is a new course record.
Second place went to Knaresborough RT's Jon Fisher with a 22.49 ride, while league points leader Tony Kent (Nova) was happy to finish in third lace on 23.43, safe in the knowledge that he has enough points in the bag to become the first veteran to win the overall league championship title in the 22 year history of the series.
A Knaresborough RT foursome of Kieran Cawthray, Nick Culshaw, Joe Mercer and Helen Derbyshire, the Yorkshire schoolgirl ten mile champion, line up at Derby this weekend in the GHS National Schoolboy/Girl ten mile title race.
