SADLY, the current debate about Coppergate II offers few meaningful alternatives. The reason for this is a true lack of vision. If we raise our heads above the city walls, we can find solutions the world over.
In Paris, two outrageously controversial, cultural buildings have been built in modern times. A glass pyramid at the Louvre and a brash high tech building, The Pompidou Centre. Both caused ferocious international debate, but both have become hugely successful buildings, bringing culture, vitality and wealth to the city.
So what do we propose in York, on the most important site in the city? A shopping centre ...
The initiative from the local council is woeful. Such lack of initiative is borne out by the continuing decline of cultural buildings in York. The once famous Castle Museum has become old and tired due to lack of investment. Penny pinching tactics for a lottery bid caused its downfall.
The City Art Gallery is drab and lifeless - a far cry from the new Tate Gallery.
Of all York's attractions, only the Minster has retained visitor numbers. We recognise now that it is an outstanding work of architecture but consider the impact when first built. A soaring stone building rising above the plains of York, dwarfing surrounding timber buildings.
My plea as we enter the new century is to be bold and controversial; to have vision and passion.
The world abounds with magnificent modern, cultural buildings, bringing pride and investment to cities. Such solutions are far sighted.
But who in York will take up the torch? Who has the courage and daring for such a proposal? I have - but do you, the citizens of York? If you do, then speak up and let the council know. A viable alternative does exist.
