A VERSION of musical chairs is under way involving some of York's best known shops. But the changes are the result of national High Street forces. The Arcadia Group is responding to the changing tastes of consumers by shutting branches and consolidating.
However, this shake-up will leave shops empty on Coppergate and Coney Street. That can only add fuel to the debate over Coppergate Riverside. Will the new development revitalise the city centre, or add extra retail space when York cannot fill its existing shops?
