WITH all the controversy on what should be the fate of the city centre, it amazes me that there is a glaring omission which no one has yet mentioned. While I think we have quite enough shops, the one retail outlet we do need is a grocery store in a central position.
I have seen these in thriving towns in the south of England. The Tesco one in Richmond, Surrey, is called Metro. It is always busy and a great place for working women to pick up what is needed for the evening meal etc. Ask anyone who remembers how handy were the grocery stores in Piccadilly and George Hudson Street.
I have not forgotten the marvellous food on sale in Marks & Spencer but we also need a more basic store. Where can one buy a bag of sugar in the city centre?
