A LEADING North Yorkshire pig farmer has spoken of his delight that the ban on exporting live pigs to Europe, imposed because of the swine fever outbreak, has been lifted.

John Rowbottom, who farms at Melbourne near Selby, said: "I am absolutely delighted because of what it means for us and because the outbreak is now under control."

The ban was lifted on Tuesday when the EU veterinary commission met to review a ban that had been scheduled to last until Thursday, August 31. In theory, the commission could have banned all meat exports to Europe, although farming circles doubted this would ever take place.
