South Bank Destroyers collected the league trophy at the York CIU Race Walking presentation night.

The Destroyers squad of Martin Fisher, Stuart Wilkinson, Ellis Pickering and Andy Heppell edged out last year's champions Tang Hall Spartans, who were only three points behind on 272.

INL Shamrocks finished in third place followed by Groves Concords.

Top in the veterans' class was Ellis Pickering, of Huntington All Stars, who made it three wins in a row after taking the 10K Championship prize.

Of some consolation to the Spartans was the second and third placings of Barry Watkinson and John McClure, respectively, in the veterans class.

In the 10K Championship, Tang Hall's Sean Martindale crossed the line but tookthird spot on the handicap behind South Banks' Pete Lewis and first placed Kev Goodwin, who won the Jim Jackson Trophy.

Paul Morgan enjoyed a good season. He retained the Guy Mitchell award with the six best results achieved by someone not in of the top three teams.

The Huntington man was also voted by his fellow Toe and Heelers as the walker of the year and was third in the points championship over nine races.

Last year's winner in that category, South Bank's Stuart Wilkinson, was second in that category exchanging places with winner Barry Watkinson, of Tang Hall, who stepped up having been runner-up 12 months ago.

Nine walkers competed in all the league races these being Dave Long (INL) Paul Morgan (Huntington) Stuart Wilkinson (South Bank) Chris Flanagan and Bob Grayson (Groves) Phil Holdsworth (Poppleton Road) and Tang Hall Trio Sean Martindale, Barry Watkinson and John McCluir.

Recorders for the season have been Brian Russling and Janet Watkinson.Russ Winters, Dick Holland and John Edershaw have shared judging with Ray Blogg Handicapping. Treasurer for the league is Bob Wilkinson.

The Les Kellett Memorial Seven Miler takes place on Sunday, September 3rd at 10.30 am at British Sugar. Last years winner was Dave Milner of South Bank.

Pete Lewis received a special achievement award.

The popular South Bank man underwent a serious operation and, while still having further treatment, competed in several races.
