PAUL Mooring steered his York team into the last 16 of the Yoplait Men's All England Bowls Fours Championship at Worthing last night.
Mooring and his Bert Keech clubmates Andrew Mooring, William Waldie and Charles Bateman led 8-7 against Paul Wilkinson's team from Long Eaton Town, Derbyshire, after nine ends of their first round clash.
Mooring then unleashed two trebles and a double to stretch his advantage of 16-7 and although he conceded three shots over the next two ends, he went on to score on four of the next six ends, notching two singles and two trebles to power home 24-13.
That took Mooring through to a second round clash against Trevor Vine's team from Windlesham, Sussex and the Bert Keech side charted into a 5-0 lead over three ends.
Vine pulled back a single at the next but Mooring and company then scored on five successive ends to hold a remarkable 13-1 lead.
Vine battled back scoring on five of the next seven ends to reduce the gap to 15-9 but Mooring kept his head and summoned up a storming finish, notching a treble, a single and a four, to win in style 23-9.
Mooring's team were taking on the title holders Kirk Smith's team from Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire, today for a place in the quarter-finals.
