THE Evening Press continues to be inundated with Coppergate coupons as the people of York speak out about plans for the city's most important shopping development in 20 years.

On Tuesday, the newspaper asked the city's residents to give their views on Land Securities' proposals which involve a £60 million scheme to extend the Coppergate Centre.

This would bring in new shops, restaurants, two new footbridges over the River Foss and riverside walkways.

Since we asked you to decide, we have received hundreds of responses and the voice of the people has revealed a city split on this vital issue, with widely differing opinions across York.

People such as Lynne Morris, from Woodthorpe, are totally behind the scheme.

She described it as a "fantastic idea" which should create "plenty of work opportunities".

Meanwhile, Rita Harvey, of the Groves area of York, advised planners simply to "think big and stop delaying."

Alan and Gwendoline Lawrence, of Acomb, said: "Anything would be an improvement on the existing grotty car park and run down buildings."

But the replies against the scheme have been just as vociferous.

John Walker, of Heworth Green, said: "This scheme would deprive York of an opportunity to develop a very important site in a sensitive manner.

"An attractive green area, not intrusive shops, is required."

Brenda and David Munro, of Clifton, said: "Tourists come to York to see a medieval city, not shopping centres. The council would be better advised to improve the Rougier Street area."

Dawn Parbutt, of Strensall, said: "Do we really need any more retail outlets? Why not fill the area with trees and wildlife?"

There is still more than a week for readers to get their views across by sending in a coupon setting out their opinions on Land Securities' proposals.

The closing date for coupons is September 1 and planners will decide on the issue during the autumn.
