TWO drivers who broke the British landspeed record at Elvington Airfield last month will return for a re-run during the Great Yorkshire Airshow.

Daredevils Mark Newby and Colin Fallows will be watched by an anticipated 30,000 spectators at Elvington over the bank holiday weekend, August 27 and 28.

The pair reached speeds of more than 300mph at the airfield in July when they became the fastest men on British soil in their cars, Split Second and Vampire.

However, on that occasion, the runs were made effectively behind closed doors, as only the media was invited to view the spectacle.

"We plan to complete four runs over the Sunday and Monday," said Mark. "We will run on full power for about a mile of the runway using parachutes to slow us down at the end.

"Elvington is a great place for this sort of demonstration because of its even terrain and unusually long runway."

Mark, 42, from Kent, is a qualified pilot, while Colin, 50, from Northamptonshire, is a former RAF propulsion technician and it was he who designed and built both cars.

Airshow organiser Ken Cothliff expects the duo to pull in the crowds.

"I know this is traditionally an airshow and we have plenty of air displays to keep visitors entertained, but the re-appearance of Vampire and Split Second will be just as breathtaking.

"You can't fully appreciate what 300mph feels like when you observe it on film or television.

"Colin and Mark have always been very special supporters of events like Elvington and it will be quite sensational to see them performing live."
