ART is no longer confined to galleries. One of the most famous sculptures of modern times towers over the A1. The Angel of the North turns thousands of motorists into art lovers every day.

The artistic endeavours of our Millennium Dome competition winners will also be seen by thousands, in a similarly informal setting. Come the autumn, when you order your Big Mac and fries, take a few moments to admire your tray. On the insert you will find the prize poem and picture from the contest we launch today.

In an age when everybody is seeking their 15 minutes of fame, this is a chance to enjoy a little longer in the spotlight. The winning artwork will first go on display in the Greenwich Dome throughout York's "day" there, as part of the Our Town Story initiative.

Having your work displayed at the Dome guarantees a slice of immortality. This is the national celebration of the Millennium - it is only here for a year. Our young winners will have been a part of that historic event, giving them something to tell their grandchildren.

A more immediate bonus is the prize: a family day out to London and the Dome. Enough incentive to spur all our talented children into action with pen and paintbrush, we hope.

Moreover, this is the chance for children from four to 16 to express what living in York means to them. What is special about this city for younger residents, its remarkable past, its colourful present - or its exciting future?

We are looking forward to seeing the entries. And the winning picture and poem will certainly ensure that customers at McDonald's Restaurants have a nice day.
