SCARBOROUGH caretaker boss Neil Thompson is preparing his squad for their opening Nationwide Conference game at Stevenage well aware that the sword of Damacles is hanging over the club.

It has hardly been the easiest of build ups for the former York City manager or his players, but Thompson said: "We all know the situation and I have to say the players have been brilliant.

"We don't know whether the club has a future or not, but they have been enthusiastic and upbeat in training when I know it has been difficult for them - I know that because I am in the same situation."

Thompson is able to name himself in a 17-strong squad to make the trip to Broadhall Way after coming through a midweek run-out without problem.

Several players have minor injuries but the only major absentee is striker Chris Tate, who could be side-lined for up four months with a knee injury.

That means Steve Brodie will be partnered in attack by Gareth Williams, while Dave Pounder could get the nod to slot in behind the front two.
