A MAN was still fighting for his life in hospital today after a two-car head-on crash near York claimed the life of his wife.
The unnamed couple's daughter, who was driving the family's car, also remains in York District Hospital, but her condition is not described as life-threatening.
The accident happened when a Rover 200 and a Jaguar collided just before noon on the B1224 Wetherby Road, roughly a mile from the A1237 York outer ring road.
The driver of the Jaguar car is described by police as a middle-aged local man who suffered cuts and bruises. He was taken to Fulford Road police station to be interviewed yesterday and later released on police bail.
His passenger received "serious injuries" but her condition is now described as stable.
All the injured were taken to York District Hospital by four ambulances with police motorbike escorts.
According to traffic sergeant Nigel Atkinson, who was at the scene, the Jaguar car was heading towards Rufforth.
The road was closed for several hours while accident investigators examined the scene.
