HAVING our cover blown is an occupational hazard. But when 20 or so people, with whom we regularly walk, trekked past our window table, it was almost too much. Although all waved they were extremely circumspect.
T-Shop, alternatively known as 'Europe on a Plate', is situated in the centre of the village. Combining the organisation of independent holidays with a caf, we found this to be a busy venue.
Drinks ranged from milkshakes with ice cream and fresh fruit, attractively priced at £1.50, to the unfortunate mis-spelt cappuccino.
Light lunches, which are served from midday to 2pm, include pat, baguettes, croque monsieur or madame, Italian tricolore salad (£4.50) and chargrilled vegetables on warm ciabatta roll (£4.50).
Uncharacteristically, Ann declined a first course. Ignoring the day's specials of sweet Belgian waffle, crepe suzette or Belgian chocolate cake, her eyes lit up seeing the standard items. Tarte au citron, bella dolci fruitti di bosco or strudel, Swiss apple pancakes with cream (£2.75) was her choice. The first spoonful had barely reached her lips when she whispered "delicious".
Being a sucker for the fish, I opted for an open smoked salmon sandwich on brown bread, Norwegian-style (£3.50). The ample helping of fish was topped with warm scrambled egg and set off with a generous portion of salad which included orange and lemon. Very tasty and filling!
A pot of tea (£1) for Ann and sparkling mineral water for me completed our snack at £8.15.
The menu invited us to browse the extensive collection of travel books, guides and maps. Maybe on our next visit.
I suspect our walking friends were carrying packed lunches. Next time their route takes in Hovingham, maybe they should travel light and sample the delicious food available here. They could even plan a European walk at the same time.
