Yorkshire skipper David Byas went into hospital for key-hole surgery on his injured knee last night - but not before making a welcome appearance at his benefit match at Hovingham.
Byas had been due to lead Yorkshire against Sir Marcus Worsley's XI in the grounds of Hovingham Hall but was ruled out after suffering a torn cartilege in the county championship match against Somerset last week.
However, it didn't stop him mingling with the healthy sized crowd and signing autographs.
In his place, Yorkshire star Gavin Hamilton led the county side in the 40-over match.
On a bright day with only one shower - which didn't bring a halt to proceedings - Yorkshire batted first and were all out for 227, their top scorers being Matthew Wood with 52, Simon Widdup 44 and Hamilton 29.
Hovingham bowler Richard Brown finished with 3-43, including the prized scalps of Wood and Hamilton, while Brad Wigney, Phil Hart (both Scarborough) and Barry Petty (Thirsk) each helped themselves to a couple of wickets.
Sir Marcus' side, which featured Yorkshire League and Costcutter York and District Senior League players, put up a spirited reply but, needing 11 from their last over, fell five runs short.
Scarborough's Nick Tubbs stole the show by reaching his century before England newcomer Matthew Hoggard had him caught by James Middlebrook for 107.
There were also good contributions from Hovingham's Nick Elliott (31) and Easingwold's Martin Robinson (29).
