A half-naked man threatened "I will kill him" outside a York pub just before midnight, the city's magistrates heard.
But the only person in sight was Lloyd Robert Jones, 23, who had a bottle in his hand, said Steven Ovenden, prosecuting.
He was wearing just a pair of boxer shorts and ran away from police who had received a 999 call of a streaker in Nunnery Lane.
At one point, Jones swore at police before giving himself up.
Jones, of Nunnery Lane, central York, pleaded guilty to a public order offence and was fined £90 with £55 costs. He was also bound over for a year. He had no previous convictions.
Jones, who was unrepresented, said a man had called on him as he was about to get into the bath. As a result of what happened between them Jones said he "lost it" and chased his visitor into the street. He did not go into details, other than a mirror was involved.
He had had a bottle of Bacardi to drink.
