YOUNGSTERS preparing to make the big move to secondary school have been brushing up their English skills - by getting to grips with juggling!
A group of around 25 pupils, who will start at Joseph Rowntree School, at New Earswick, in September, have been put through their paces by juggler Claire Gibbs, as part of an exercise to improve their ability to give instructions.
Brenda Elliott, a teacher at Wigginton Primary School, has been running the summer literacy school at Joseph Rowntree.
Children have been working in pairs, passing on instructions on how to juggle. The ability to give instructions makes up part of the National Curriculum for English at secondary school.
She said: "They are getting off to a flying start." City of York Council is running six literacy summer schools across the city as part of a national drive to boost literacy skills.
