Malton and Norton golfer Emma Duggleby has been crowned the queen of European amateur golf.

The 28-year-old Curtis Cup star produced a stunning last round performance in Poland to win the European individual title after a three-hole play-off.

There seemed little hope of the English matchplay champion lifting the title as she went into the final round seven strokes behind the leader, Tania Elofegui, of Spain.

But she clawed her way back into contention with a dazzling 68 at the Amber Baltic course.

That was the lowest score of the day by three strokes and the gap between her an Elofegui narrowed as the Spaniard started to drop stokes under pressure.

Duggleby's round included an eagle at the 10th where she knocked in a 40ft putt, and four birdies.

Both players completed the regulation 72 holes with a five under par aggregate of 283 to go into a play-off.

Long-time leader Elofegui cracked under the intense pressure Duggleby had generated, driving into the water at the first to take a triple-bogey seven.

The North Yorkshire woman collected three straight pars to triumph by three strokes and become only the second English winner of the title after Joanne Morley in 1992.

Duggleby's rounds were 72, 72,71 68.

Her Malton and Norton colleague Simon Dyson recovered from a poor third round to finish well in the money in the Volvo Scandinavian Masters at Kungsangen, near Stockholm.

Rounds of 71 and 68 had seen him comfortably make the cut, but his hopes of finishing high up the leaderboard nose-dived on Saturday with a 75.

He hit back with a par 71 yesterday to finish with an aggregate of 285 - 15 strokes behind runaway leader Lee Westwood, whose confidence in sky-high going into next week's PGA Championship.

The 27-year-old, from Worksop, finished three strokes ahead of his nearest challenger, Michael Campbell, of New Zealand.
