AS a native of York, of more than three quarters of a century, I was incensed to read that an employee of the city council had suggested that the City of York Archives should be transferred to York University.
These documents, including the original charters, are the very heritage of the citizens of York, and should not be removed from the heart of the city. Writing as one who has been a volunteer of the archives for 15 years, I have observed that they are not only used by local inhabitants, but also by students and academics from across the world and frequently by numerous council departments.
Information and plans would not be available to the latter at the University, as they are in the present location.
I trust that our elected representatives on the city council will fight to retain our heritage in the centre of the city.
