York is set for a bus revolution, following demands for better services from passengers.
Council transport chiefs are working with the city's main bus operator, First York, towards a radical overhaul of bus services.
First York's strategy for the future of bus services in York includes "Metro"-styled bus services running at least every ten minutes along six core cross-city routes with limited stops.
A different "Easylink" service would run at a lower frequency, using every bus stop, which would penetrate further into villages and estates.
Other proposals include: The integration of park and ride services with "metro" services; a simplified zonal fare structure with cashless "smart cards" for regular travellers; new, accessible buses; traffic management works to give buses priority over cars at key road junctions.
The council will develop these proposals further with a view to introducing them early next year.
A plea for better bus services was the most consistent response from York citizens during recent consultation.
