I THANK the Evening Press for coverage of the problems relating to the city archives. The council's treatment of archivist Rita Freedman, whose only 'crime' was to defend her lifetime work, was reprehensible. It is wonderful that someone is prepared to stand up for their principles.
The wider issue of the prospect of the city archives leaving the centre of York is of utmost importance. The records belong to the city and are kept in trust for future generations. As mentioned in the Press, people from many parts of the world will wish to come to York to do research and explore the city's past.
If the reason for considering the move is an economic one, York should appreciate its treasures and fund more spacious accommodation with better facilities and keep the city records intact.
I hope you will continue to use your influence to sway the council decision and help keep the archives in York.
Janet Webb,
Barney Lane,
Flaxton, York.
