It's not the name I would choose for a snack spot. Does it denote the consequences of eating there or discomfort removed?
Walking into town early one morning, I was delighted to find somewhere for breakfast. Small as it is, with only eight chairs and five high stools, it provided a welcome stopping off point for many people. Not all ate in with many ordering sandwiches to take out.
Not one for a cooked breakfast on a regular basis, I relented selecting the Lite Bite at £2.50. This consisted of bacon, fried egg, sausage, beans and toast. Anyone wishing to push the boat out could add mushrooms, tomato, black pudding and hash browns to make up the 'Full' at £3.95. When you think how much a similar plateful would cost at a motorway service station this has to be great value.
My meal was excellent; the bacon lean, sausage not too highly seasoned and toast done to perfection. Included in the price was a mug of tea or coffee.
Vegetarians needn't worry. For you, bacon is replaced by a second egg and there are Quorn sausages.
This venue seemed essentially to cater for the local commercial premises providing all the usual sandwich and jacket potato fillings. However, there were enough people sitting down to breakfast to indicate this was their regular haunt.
While away from the city centre, any breakfastless user of the Askham Bar park and ride buses has an excellent fuelling station en route.
All the food looked very fresh. Perhaps one day I'll find a reason to call in for a lunchtime sandwich.
