Arguably, you could refer to this venue as the Evening Press canteen. One or two colleagues were making the most of the take-away counter, but thankfully my cover was not blown.
This cheerful spot opens straight on to the busy Walmgate. From any of the half dozen tables, people watching is an easy activity. One wall bears probably the most comprehensive take-away menu I have seen. All fillings are available in conventional sandwiches or baguettes.
Because I indicated my intention of eating in, a smaller menu was produced. From the jacket potatoes and sandwiches I chose a ham baguette (£2.80). The ham could have just been carved and the accompanying garnish was freshly prepared.
It was a fairly solid eat and I was grateful for the pot of tea I had requested. With the jug of water this produced four cups of tea. Good value at 90p.
From the range of cakes and pastries I selected a section of lemon sponge to round off my snack.
A solicitor friend came in for a take-way beef sandwich. Seeing me he decided to sit down, consuming broccoli soup and a substantial breadcake before tackling his sandwich.
The fact the he is a regular customer speaks volumes for the quality of the food and friendly service. He had no difficulty in getting a 'doggy bag' for his partly-eaten sandwich!
For a total of £4.55 I was well satisfied and ready to face the next challenge of the day..
