KEVIN Darley, narrowly beaten aboard Far Cry in the Ascot Gold Cup in June, can gain deserved compensation in the Goodwood version tomorrow.

The Sheriff Hutton jockey is reunited with Martin Pipe's ace stayer in the two miles J P Morgan-sponsored showpiece, which has £80,000 in added prize money.

The race is without last year's winner Kayf Tara, the conqueror of Far Cry at Ascot, who has been retired to stud.

Beaten only a head by Godolphin's top stayer in the Ascot Gold Cup, Far Cry battled courageously every inch to the line only to be denied in a bobbing finish.

Winner of last year's Northumberland Plate and Doncaster Cup, with Darley in the saddle both times, Far Cry can get back on the victory roll tomorrow.

Darley can also clinch the opening race, the Oak Tree Stakes, on Danceabout, trained by Geoff Wragg, who was on the mark yesterday with Cassandra Go, who narrowly beat North Yorkshire hopes Eastern Purple and Rudi's Pet in the King George Stakes.

Danceabout, a course-and-distance winner in May, has since run two cracking races in defeat.

She was fifth to Observatory in the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot and third to Alshakr in the Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket, where she was done no favours by a wide draw.

The £10,000 William Hill Mile is tomorrow's handicap centrepiece and hopes are high that Red N' Socks can capitalise on his light weight.

John Dunlop's smart three-year-old finished a close-up seventh in a red-hot Britannia Handicap at Royal Ascot before beating the useful Nice One Clare at Lingfield last time.

In a wide-open race, Red N' Socks offers each-way punters a real shout, and he is awarded the Nap vote.

Endless Summer, an impressive debut winner, looks the answer to the Group 2 Richmond Stakes, while Eurolink Sundance, already a winner on this track, can double her score by taking the Loraine Kidd Memorial Nursery Handicap. The drop back to five furlongs is expected to suit her.

The concluding race, the Drawing Room Handicap ,looks a trappy affair but Lycian has made two solid efforts and has the added advantage of a course and distance victory. Simon Whitworth takes the mount on James Toller's five-year-old.

Over the sticks at Sedgefield, Brian Harding can take advantage of Tony Dobbin's spell on the sidelines by deputising for the injured rider on Handsome Henry in the Sedgefield Sunday Car Boot Novices' Chase.

Craigary, a course and distance winner, can land the opening selling hurdle, while the ultra-consistent Kinda Groovy (3.05) is also worth noting in the hands of Graham Lee.
