YORK City trialist David McNiven is keeping his fingers crossed that Terry Dolan will offer him a chance to extend his Bootham Crescent stay.

The City chief has indicated he will decide McNiven's future, and that of fellow trialist Phil Hadland, later this week.

Both have been training with the Minstermen since the players returned for pre-season, joining the senior squad at the club's training camp at Keele University last week.

McNiven, released by Oldham at the end of last season, has done his chances no harm by scoring twice in two starts.

"It's just a matter of keeping my fingers crossed and hopefully something will be sorted out in the next few days," he said.

"I have enjoyed my time here, the facilities are excellent and the lads are a good bunch so I am just hoping things work out.

"I have got a couple of goals which always helps.

"The first one (against Marske United) is always a bit special and scoring again (against Newcastle Town) was good for the confidence."

The 22-year-old, a second-half substitute on Saturday, confessed he was grateful for the opportunity to show what he can do .

"I had an ankle injury a few years ago but I got back into the first team at Oldham and scored a few goals. My last game for them was against Luton and I scored but I was never involved again and I was just being messed about.

"I went to Scarborough last season on loan because I just desperate to get away and I enjoyed it there.

"It's great to be playing again and scoring goals because that is what it is all about."
