Make tracks for rail lines

Brian Beadle suggests off-road routes for mountain bikers to try out this winter

To keep you cycling off-road during the winter months old railway tracks are useful. There are many of these disused tracks around York, Hull and the east coast such as the one from Market Weighton to Beverley.

Market Weighton to Beverley

The line from Market Weighton to Beverley was constructed between 1862 and 1865 with two stations. One at Kiplingcotes, the other at Cherry Burton. The line, although still profitable, was closed in 1965. Although the idea for the line came from George Hudson who built many railway tracks in these parts he wasn't responsible for the Market Weighton - Beverley section. However, the route is called 'the Hudson Way' in his memory.

THE ROUTE

When in doubt look at the map provided

From the centre of Market Weighton, head south east and find the sign directing you to the Hudson Way along Finkle Street.

Look out for Springdale Road on the left which will take you to the start of the track. After a short stretch, the track crosses a minor road then head along Goodmanham Dale passing Spring Wells. As the name suggests there are numerous springs in the area which help to supply water for Market Weighton.

Don't forget to have a browse round Grannies Attick at Kiplingcotes Station which is a good place for a rest and some refreshment.

Spend some time in the town of Beverley with its magnificent Minster dominating the skyline. Other interesting buildings are St Mary's Church, the North Bar, Market Cross and the Guildhall.

If you wish to use an alternative route for your return why not visit the pretty villages of Bishop Burton, Cherry Burton, Etton and South Dalton, then taking the minor road to Goodmanham and Market Weighton. It would add about five miles to your return journey.
