A TOP job in local politics has tempted away the man who masterminded the set-up of City of York Council.

Chief Executive David Clark announced to councillors he will leave his post in mid-October after five years at the authority.

He leaves to become director general of the Society of Local Authority Chief Executives, a body which represents managers in local government.

He said: "This post will give me a national and international role.

"As you can imagine, I am looking forward to it greatly. My only sadness is that I have to give up what is a truly fabulous job.

"I have grown to love the city and many of the excellent people with whom it has been my privilege to work.

"It is a great wrench to me to give up this role, but the challenge of being director general is simply too great to miss."

Mr Clark joined City of York Council as one of the first members of staff of the newly formed unitary authority.

His mission was to unite different areas, formerly covered by separate district councils including Selby, Ryedale and Harrogate, into one.

His work was complimented today by council members.

Leader Rod Hills said: "David has done a tremendous job. We now have an excellent council, clearly demonstrated by the fact that we are a Beacon authority, are in the top seven in the country for social services. and so on. He will be missed."

Liberal Democrat leader Steve Galloway said: "The fact that David has been offered such a significant national job reflects well on him and the council. He has always been a man with loads of ideas and very much a fresh thinker."
