A TEENAGE daytripper visiting an East Yorkshire beauty spot died after falling 50 feet down cliffs as his horrified friends looked on.

A second man was injured after he tried to get down the cliffs to help his friend who had lost his footing at North Landing, near Flamborough.

And in a separate incident near Malton, a 70-year-old local man died after his car ran off the road.

The teenager was part of a group of men aged 19 to 25 who were visiting the coast from West Yorkshire after a night out drinking.

The incident happened at about 11am yesterday when the group climbed down the cliffs from the footpath to a ledge. Inspector Steve Galloway, of Humberside police, said the group had decided to drive to the cliffs in the early hours after drinking in a pub, a nightclub and a party in West Yorkshire.

"For whatever treason they went down to the ledge, which isn't very accessible. One of them slipped or stumbled off and fell to the bottom," he said.

Emergency services were alerted to the accident by mobile phone calls from holidaymakers who witnessed the fall. At one point, a crowd of about 200 people was watching the rescue operation.

Police later confirmed that the teenager, from the Normanton area, had died.

Inspector Galloway added: "We would warn people of the hidden dangers with regard to cliff tops and ask them to refrain from going to the edge of cliffs."

At Malton, the 70-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene after the blue Sierra he was driving ran off the B1257 Malton to Helmsley road at the weekend.

Sgt Bernard Winder, of North Yorkshire police, said the accident happened at about 1.40pm on Saturday, about half-a-mile west of Barton-le-Street. He said: "This vehicle negotiated a slight left hand bend and, for reasons unknown at this stage, left the road to its near side and ended up in the bordering hedgerow."

The man, who has not yet been named, was pronounced dead at the scene by a local doctor.

Police investigating the accident want to speak to any witnesses of the accident or anyone who witnessed the behaviour of the driver before the accident.

Anyone who can help is asked to contact TC Matt Knowles at Malton Police Station on 01653 692424.

Meanwhile, the disappearance of a national park ranger from Grosmont, near Whitby, sparked a helicopter search of the Robin Hood's Bay area. The man, who had gone looking for his dog and had not been seen for more than ten hours, was spotted at the base of the cliffs by the aircrew and winched to safety.

Both he and the dog were cold, but unhurt.

A man and a woman received burns to their hands and another man had facial burns when a gas lamp exploded in their tent at Stoupe Cross camp site, Hawsker Lane, Whitby. They were taken to Whitby Hospital for treatment and later discharged. They escaped from the tent and used buckets of water to fight the fire until Whitby firefighters arrived.
