THERE was an added poignancy to the Kohima memorial service in York this year: the Duke of Edinburgh took "what is likely to have been the final salute" from the veterans of that terrible battle.

It is 56 years since the Allies fought the Japanese forces at Kohima. The number of survivors dwindles as we move farther away from those terrible times. Inevitably memorial services attended by war veterans will gradually pass into history themselves. Then we must work even harder to ensure their sacrifices are never forgotten.

Prince Philip's attendance began a remarkable Royal week for York. He will accompany the Queen on her visit this Thursday. That is set to be a highlight of the city's Millennium celebrations.
