THE fact that the magnificent and unique presentation of the York Millennium Mystery Plays was sold out before it started, and that I am but one of many who has queued in vain for returned tickets, indicates that those who have seen the event are probably vastly outnumbered by those unfortunates who vainly aspired to do so.
Apart from two pre-performance half-hour programmes on TV, it appears that no actual filmed version of the Mystery Plays is planned - I believe that this is the wish of the authorities concerned, presumably to limit the commercial appeal of what is essentially a religious presentation.
We can perhaps respect that limitation, but surely amongst the directly involved staff, there will have been, if only in full rehearsal, the opportunity and probably the expertise to produce a "domestic" version. If not wholly professional, this would suffice for the localised production of a video to be put on sale for the many who would be eager to buy it. The profits would be a useful contribution to Minster funds.
Perhaps something along these lines is being considered. I do hope so.
