CEREAL growers should be aiming for maximum quality, advises HGCA, after issuing an estimate of record wheat plantings across Britain. Based on the 2000 Planting Survey, total wheat acreage in Great Britain is 2.1m hectares, up 14pc from last year. HGCA says this will lead to a much bigger crop, making quality more critical, particularly as overseas markets become more important. The survey also found that plantings of barley in Britain are down marginally from last year and oilseed rape down by 20pc.
