Darren Lehmann made further progress towards becoming the first batsman in the country to reach 1,000 first class runs this season when Yorkshire resumed on 144 for three against Somerset at Scarborough today.
Yorkshire began the second day only 38 runs adrift of Somerset who were bowled out for only 182 yesterday on a green North Marine Road pitch.
The Australian was unbeaten on 21 and David Byas on ten and their immediate aim was to knock off the deficit - which they succeeded in doing together.
Lehmann, who was on 784 first class runs at the start of his innings and topped the 800 mark last night, was soon adding to his tally in the morning's first over from Graham Rose whom he hit to the cover boundary, Michael Burns being guilty of a misfield.
Steffan Jones shared the attack for Somerset who seemed to be lacking in firepower without Andy Caddick in the side but there were no easy runs for Yorkshire as the fourth-wicket pair settled in.
Byas, searching for better form in the middle order, would be well pleased with his cover drive off Rose which brought him a boundary as the score moved to 156 for three.
Lehmann put all his weight into a scorching cover drive against Jones to make it a 50 stand in 18 overs.
A quiet passage of play was broken by a square cut by Byas which took him into the 30s and Somerset made their first bowling change with the scores level when Peter Trego took over from Jones.
He started with a maiden to Byas and in a double bowling change Burns came on for Rose and Lehmann cut him for a single to give Yorkshire the lead on 183 for three.
Matthew Hoggard, capped by England before Yorkshire, was finally awarded his county colours while taking three for 47 yesterday - his third wicket taking him to 99 first class dismissals for Yorkshire.
There was every indication that Ryan Sidebottom would also have been capped by skipper David Byas in a secretly arranged double presentation but the script did not quite go according to plan because the left-arm swing bowler had to be stretchered from the field after collapsing in agony in his run-up to the crease.
Sidebottom tore a muscle in his hip and will not bowl again in the match.
