I WOULD like to correct some of the errors contained in Leslie Pitt's letter published on Saturday (July 15). In trying to tackle this difficult issue the council is responding to the concerns of the many local people who use the park and have found that their enjoyment and safety and that of their children is put at risk by the mess left by the geese.
It would be irresponsible not to tackle this problem and the council has tried all possible measures over recent years.
We have listened and responded to all ideas put to us (including to Dame Judi Dench to whom the chief executive, David Clark, responded on June 26).
We have given our active support to the idea of relocation. Two suitable wildlife organisations have applied to the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions for licences to relocate the geese. But relocation is not straightforward and while one is waiting to hear, the DETR has turned the other down.
Although we have received a licence to cull some of the geese we are not acting on it at present while there are still other avenues to explore.

Acting Head of the York Leisure Office,
