KAGOSHIMA, pipped at the post at Pontefract three weeks ago, is napped to gain deserved compensation at Beverley tomorrow.

The five-year-old, trained by John Norton near Barnsley, goes for the Watt Memorial Handicap, a once-prestigious race which has now plummeted down the rankings and is no better than selling-race standard on tomorrow's evidence.

Kagoshima, rated only 58 but set to carry to-weight of 10st, was caught on the line by Bustling Rio (twice a winner since) at Pontefract on his latest outing having earlier scored on the same course on his previous appearance.

A progressive stayer, Kagoshima who has the beating of recent Catterick winner Keep Ikis on his latest run, can regain the winning thread tomorrow.

The £10,000 Tote Placepot Handicap is the feature race of the day and David Barron could hold the key, courtesy of Lord Omni.

This lightly-raced gelding got off the mark over six furlongs in a ladies' handicap at Thirsk last month. Barron did feel at the time that the distance of that race was an absolute minimum for Lord Omni, who duly steps up to an extended seven furlongs tomorrow.

With top jockey Kevin Darley a significant booking and owner Peter Jones, chairman of the Tote, expected to present the winning trophy, it could well be that he is handing it to himself.

Darley can also win the Turnstile Maiden Auction Stakes on Wondergreen, trained by Tim Easterby, and a promising sixth to one of this stablemates on her debut at Pontefract recently. That experience should stand the juvenile in good stead here.

Bowlers Boy could be another winner for Darley in the Struthers & Carter Handicap.

Settrington trainer, John Quinn, enjoyed a fine season, has had Bowlers Boy in the form of his life this summer and the seven-year-old remains in excellent heart, judged on his fast-finishing fourth at Pontefract last week. Provided tomorrow's ground is not over-fast, he should go well despite top weight.

Alabama Wurley (2.45) from Dave Morris's in-form yard, and Finery (4.45) trained by Chris Dwyer, another trainer going well at present are also worthy of note.

Butterwick near Malton trainer Richard Fahey's decision to sent Westgate Run all the way to Brighton should not be overlooked.

The three-year-old lines-up for the Richard Bolchover 40th Birthday Party Classified Stakes and will relish the distance of a mile and a half.

Winner of two quick races, Westgate Run has since suffered a couple of defeats, but both came in muddling affairs, which failed to bring her stamina into play. She deserves another chance.

Also worth noting at Brighton are previous course winners Lycian (4.30) and Chakra (5.30).
