A SHOWDOWN of the big shouters is on the cards when a cheeky bid to draw shoppers from York to the east coast is made on Monday.
Barrel-chested town crier Ted Davey is coming to the city to proclaim the delights of the Freeport Hornsea Outlet Village.
But Ted isn't going to have things his own way, as York's own town crier John Redpath is also heading for the Mansion House at 10.30am.
"He's in my territory, isn't he?" said John today.
But the vocal encounter is set to be a thoroughly friendly one. "He rang me a week ago and told me he was coming," John added. "I thought maybe Freeport was moving to Clifton Moor or Monks Cross."
A City of York Council spokesman said there were no rules against this kind of thing in the city centre.
He added: "Although there appears to be nothing to prevent this individual coming to York and advertising this commercial development it might be something which the national Guild of Town Criers would have a view on since it seems to inappropriate to arrive uninvited in another city for such purposes.
