A York couple who gave themselves to help others were today celebrating 65 years of wedded bliss.

Retired GPO telephone engineer Donald Peacock, 86, would not let the early loss of his sight stop him working or helping those in hospital.

After he went blind in 1954, he mended telephones by feel until he retired in 1975. He was a long-time chairman of the York Hospitals' Broadcasting Services and for years chairman of the York and District News for The Blind. His work for others earned him the Imperial Service Medal from the Queen.

Together with his musical wife Connie, he organised and ran parties and other events for children and young people for decades, starting during the Second World War.

Mrs Peacock won a city-wide reputation for her chips.

Today the Acomb couple were celebrating the 65th anniversary of their wedding at South Park Nursing Home, Gale Lane, with their family and friends.

They married in Hull after they "met" over the telephone and lived in Wheatlands Grove, Acomb for 60 years.

They have a son, granddaughter and two great-grandchildren.
