ONCE again our city fathers, in their wisdom, have bestowed the Freedom of the City on the ships company of our very own warship, HMS York. The members of this gallant company have demonstrated by their behaviour in public that they are indeed worthy of this honour.
In addition, supported by their captain, Commander Paul Porter and aided and abetted by Captain Weston RM and his Royal Marine Band, they have contributed to many of our local charities.
Galtres School in particular has much to thank HMS York and the band for, not only financially, but by a show of affection to the pupils that had to be seen to be believed.
In the few days at their disposal, Commander Porter and his ship's company entertained one and all on board their ship. And on the Saturday afternoon they invited the veterans of the York Royal Naval Association on board for a special farewell party in the officers mess. A good time was had by all.
