Petitions signed by more than 25,000 protesters against the closure of two York swimming pools, will be put before councillors this week.
Members of the City of York Council Leisure Services Committee will this Thursday consider two petitions concerning the future of Barbican and Yearsley pools.
The action group to save Yearsley swimming pool from closure, collected some 13,486 signatures, while Barbican action group including schools and swim clubs managed 12,743.
From primary school children to pensioners, the considered pool closures have been met with city wide outrage. Protesters say they play a vital role in the community, with attendance's at York's municipal pools exceeding 450,00.
In a phone poll for our Save Our Swim campaign, we asked readers the question: Should our pools stay open? An overwhelming 765 people said yes, while only 17 said no.
Decision-makers are organising a proper consultation process on the future of leisure services to ensure the views and priorities of citizens, customers and communities are heard.
