HERE is the winner of my Horrible Eyesores of York competition. It is the derelict buildings on Queen's Staith near Ouse Bridge described aptly by the mystery man who took the picture as a "tourist disattraction".
I know who he is and I agree with him when he says it has been a blot on the Yorkscape for years.
My mystery man says: "I am fortunate to be able to see and photograph many of York's beautiful vistas as well as its horrible eyesores, so if I am lucky enough to win the five CDs you offered as a prize I would like them to go to The Blind and Partially Sighted Society based in Bootham. I wish them many hours of pleasant listening."
What a kind thought from a caring man. It shall be done, you have Dick's word on it.
Many readers, including former Lord Mayor of York Coun Peter Vaughan, were stirred by my eyesores competition so here's a selection from the postbag.
Coun Vaughan, The Old Village, Huntington: "Stonebow, The Moat House Hotel, the empty shops and tatty industrial units at Keswick Way, Huntington." Coun Vaughan added a very interesting PS: "All architects should have to display their name prominently on their buildings." Hear, hear!
Mrs B Pettitt, Navigation Road: "The White Swan Hotel on the corner of Piccadilly, the Euro Dollar site next to the old B&Q on Foss Islands Road, the shop on the corner of St Deny's Road and Walmgate."
Sue Ellis, Abbots Way: "The left-hand side at Monks Cross roundabout opposite Leedham's showrooms where a wrecked car is filled with rubbish."
Brian Smith, Whenby Grove, Huntington: "The hideous, untidy, messy frontal appearance of the Bay Horse pub in Gillygate."
Thanks to everyone who entered the competition I expect a detailed positive response from City of York Council by noon on Monday or I will get sore!
