A CONTROVERSIAL scheme to enlarge a roundabout will ease traffic problems on a York road, a study has found.
City of York Council members will hear that enlarging the Shipton Road roundabout, beside the new Rawcliffe Bar park and ride site, would improve conditions on the Shipton Road service road.
It follows a survey of local residents which centred on extra traffic using the road as a rat run since the opening of the park and ride.
Residents and businesses were given a list of possibilities to ease the problem, including making the service road one way and introducing speed humps.
An application for planning permission has already been made to City of York Council to create a new access road to the park and ride site, and increase the size of the roundabout at the junction of the A19 and the A1237.
The scheme is currently the subject of public consultation.
David Young, the council's principal engineer in highway development, said: "The option with the largest support was to wait for the A19/A1237 roundabout to be enlarged and to review the matter at that time."
It would be expected to increase capacity for traffic at the junction and reduce queuing.
Members of the council's planning and transport committee, which meets on Tuesday, are expected to ask officers to re-assess the situation if the roundabout extension goes ahead.
