A 20-runner handicap may not seem the ideal betting medium at any time, let alone on a Sunday, but Harmony Hall makes plenty of appeal in such a race at Doncaster tomorrow.
Trained by Milton Bradley, whose horses can do no wrong at present, the six-year-old bids for the £10,000 Mail On Sunday Mile Handicap and, in pole position in stall one, he is strongly fancied to come out on top.
Harmony Hall, who developed into a pretty useful novice hurdler last winter, has shaped up well in his two outings on the Flat this season, most recently at Goodwood where he was beaten only two-and-a-half lengths into fourth place by the in-form Adobe.
Tomorrow's field comprises more quantity than quality and Harmony Hall, the mount of smart apprentice Paul Fitzsimons, is napped to open his seasonal account.
The £15,000 Timeform Sprint Rated Handicap is a tricky affair to solve, not least because several of the runners were in action in last night's Gosforth Park Cup at Newcastle.
One who wasn't and who deserves every consideration is Sunley Sense, trained by Mick Channon and the mount of Steve Drowne.
Two solid second-placed efforts, at York and Chester, preceded Sunley Sense's bid for last week's Wokingham Handicap at Royal Ascot. But, after blazing a trail down the middle of the course, he failed to last home over six furlongs and finished down the field.
Sure to be in his element back over the minimum trip tomorrow, Sunley Sense is fancied to take some pegging back.
Kevin Darley, who is riding winners galore at present, can make his journey to Doncaster well worthwhile.
The Sheriff Hutton jockey has double prospects on Mantusis and Rasha's Realm in the L J Monks Showcase Handicap and the EBF 'Family Day' Novice Stakes respectively.
Vintage Premium, the apple of Richard Fahey's eye, can improve on his recent runner-up place on Knavesmire and go one better in the Carbon Link Conditions Stakes.
At Goodwood, Thirsk trainer David Nicholls can make his mark by landing the £20,000 Vodafone Stewards' Cup Trial Handicap with Royal Result.
Although still seeking his first win of the campaign, Royal Result is gradually running into form and there was much to like about his latest effort in the red-hot Wokingham Handicap at Royal Ascot where he stayed on strongly into sixth place behind Harmonic Way.
Adrian Nicholls, the trainer's apprentice-son, again has the mount tomorrow and Royal Result could well defy top-weight.
Much to the disappointment of the Goodwood executive, the Listed £30,000 'On The House' Stakes has attracted just two runners, Swallow Flight and Duck Row.
Betting on the outcome of matches is a precarious business and, with precious little to choose between these two horses, this is a race for watching only although Swallow Flight gets the call in my book.
