I ASK the highways department of City Of York Council when are they going to remove all humps from roads in the city?

According to the 1996 Highway Road Humps Regulations they must not be built on or within 25 metres of bridges, subways, culverts or tunnels.

Therefore they must be illegal.

Think of the animals:

IN her moving letter (Evening Press, June 23), Heather Causnett said what many animal lovers think and feel.

But what can be done? There are numerous animal charities and people support their favourites, but one in particular works to help farm animals.

Founded in 1967, Compassion In World Farming campaigns tirelessly to get our Government to ban live animal exports. They are also trying to bring about the end of pig factory farming in the EU.

Last year, more than one million lambs and sheep were sent from Britain to be slaughtered abroad - suffering exhausting journeys to Greece, Spain or Italy.

Sadly, welfare rules are broken en route and in abattoirs there. Every year, thousands of sheep - many from this country - come to a sickening end at the Eid-el-Kabir mass ritual slaughter in France, if they haven't already died in transit.

If Heather's letter has made you think more deeply about the treatment of animals reared for food - here and abroad - then one way to help them is to become a member of CIWF like many media personalities. Their address is: Compassion In World Farming, Charles House, 5A Charles Street, Petersfield, Hampshire, GU32 3EH.

Value of roundabouts:

In a bid to address the longstanding problems at the A19/A1237 roundabout on the York Outer Ring Road the council has had a big idea.

They are proposing to spend millions on a big roundabout to replace the existing small roundabout. With peak-time traffic queuing from beyond the Harrogate roundabout to past the Wigginton roundabout, motorists would certainly appreciate some relief from ring road misery. However, will this proposal unbung the ring road and allow traffic to flow at all times again? When the ring road and the A19 will still be single-carriage roads - I have my doubts.

Is this proposal an early example of the much-vaunted new best value or just old fashioned bad value ?
