THE new boss of the North York Moors National Park has warned "We cannot stand by and watch farming decline".
Andy Wilson chief executive of the park says the authority cannot "simply re-act" to farmers' diversification schemes.
As a result its members have been urged to adopt a pro-active policy on schemes and officers are to produce new planning guidance on the issue.
He said in a report to the authority: "We need to ensure that our planning policy and practice is contributing positively to the achievement of our diversification aim.
"A more pro-active approach is needed to ensure that the best outcomes emerge and a range of activity is being suggested to achieve this."
It is important for the park officers to make full use of the contacts they have with farmers and communities in the park said Mr Wilson.
The authority has taken the lead in developing farm schemes which provide environmental and economic success. This work has already provided success in marketing moorland products he adds and it will be stepped up.
Advice to farming families is important, said Mr Wilson because it can help stimulate ideas.
