WEMBLEY finalist Harold Box is the new coach of Heworth rugby league club.

Box, a former full-back with Featherstone Rovers and Wakefield Trinity, will be introduced to his new charges at a meeting tomorrow night (7pm).

All players past, present and future are urged to attend the meeting when Box will lay out his plans for the forthcoming season.

He will use his first term in charge to lay the foundations then go all out for promotion to the National Conference premier division the following year.

"My aim is to get Heworth back to being a successful side," Box told the Evening Press today. "I don't want to go there and make up the numbers as a middle of the table team. I want to aim for the top and get back in the top flight.

"But this year we will take stock, look at the strengths and weaknesses and see what we can improve on."

Pre-season training begins next week on Tuesday, July 4 and Box is hoping for a good turn-out as the Villagers look to improve on last term's disappointing campaign.

"They don't have to be the most talented team to win games. I will put in 100 per cent and if they give me that back on the training field and on the pitch I'm sure we will do well," said Box, who is planning to appoint an assistant in the near future.

Box enjoyed a distinguished 16-year career in the professional game. During his 10 years with Featherstone he played in the 1974 Challenge Cup final when they lost to Warrington, reached two Yorkshire Cup finals and won the first and second division championships.

He then moved on to Wakefield where he played in both the first and second divisions, gaining promotion twice.

He also represented Yorkshire and Wales, as well as playing in a Great Britain trial match.

More recently Box, who learned his coaching trade with amateur clubs Featherstone Miners Welfare and Travellers Saints, spent seven years coaching the Academy and Alliance teams at Huddersfield Giants before their merger with Sheffield.

Young York City supporters will be able to watch rugby league neighbours York Wasps for free on Friday night.

Members of the Junior Reds will be admitted to the Wasps' final match of the season for nothing if they show their identification cards at the Huntington Stadium turnstiles.

A big turnout of youngsters is expected for the clash with Lancashire Lynx.

Between 800 and 1000 vouchers were handed out to children by mascot Wobby and club officials on the streets of York city centre on Saturday.

Wobby said the initiative "went very well" and anyone who received a ticket is reminded that they will be admitted for free if they produce it at the turnstiles. Tickets could not be printed in time so the freebies took the form of season ticket vouchers.

The Wasps are hopeful of registering only their fifth win of the season against bottom club Lancashire.

The match will be followed by the on-pitch presentation of the Supporters Club's annual awards, including the Player of the Year.

The match kicks-off at 7.30pm.
