I NOTED with interest the quote from the City of York Council's head of highway regulation, Peter Evely (Show us the way to go home, June 26) in reply to concerns that York citizens may be being put at risk through delays to ambulances caused by the widespread roadworks being carried out in the city.

"There is no way we can have ambulances whizzing along at 50 or 60mph straight to the door of 53 Acacia Avenue for one incident, as that would cause more problems for other people for the rest of the century when there are no accidents to attend there."

While finding the language a trifle baffling, I came to the conclusion that the reason for there being no further accidents at that address is that the residents died en-route to York District Hospital or possibly left to live nearer Clifton Moor.
