ANDREW Hoyles has been appointed professional at the York Golf Club, Strensall as successor to Tony Mason, who left in May to join Whitby Golf Club as professional after 23 years in the post.

Steve Watson, secretary at York, said: "We are delighted to announce Andrew's appointment. We had 61 applicants and had a difficult task as the standard was very high."

Hoyles, who is 35, has been pro at Kenwick Park, Lincolnshire for the past five years.

He turned pro at the age of 17 and since then has been assistant at Cleethorpes and professional at New Mills, Cheshire and Buxton and High Peak Golf Club, Derbyshire before moving to Kenwick Park.

Hoyles spend some time playing abroad in the 1980s, spending five months on the Sunshine Tour in South Africa.

He was in the top 20 of the Assistants' Championship in 1987-88, was a regular in the North Region PGA events from 1982-85 and then played in the Midlands PGA tournament from 1985-90.

He will take up his new post on July 12.

The Knaresborough Golf Club Am-Am for 2000 is staged on Wednesday, July 5, and will again raise funds for the Martin House Children's Hospice Appeal.

It is a cause Knaresborough has been proud to support ever since the first Am-Am in 1993, and 35 of the 49 start-times have already been booked.

Those remaining are starts between 9am and 11am, but with a special discount for times between 9am and 10am. Late entries are being accepted.

Knaresborough's Rabbits Section retained the Moore Trophy after winning at Oakdale last Saturday

Robert Pauer won the major prize on Fulford Golf Club's Captains' Day after a close finish with Alan Bradley.

Both finished on 42 stableford points, but Pauer took the honours with a better back nine, and carried off Ted Kendall's Captains' Prize.

John Miller won the division one (handicap scratch to 12) with 42 points, while Bradley was top in division two (13-16) and George Lane in division three (17-28) with 42.

A huge field of 203 competitors took part in ideal conditions with 54 players finishing under par off the yellow tees.

Which was in contrast to the previous day's June monthly medal won by David Rose with a 67. Played off the white tees, only nine in the field of 81 beat par.

Carol Kilford won Kilnwick Percy's monthly Ladies Medal on net 68, Christine Hunter second, and Vivien Howson third, while Linda Johnson led in the Qualifier.

The Ladies nine hole Texas Scramble was won by Yolande Nuttall, Dora Langworthy and Christine Hunter, taking first place on nett 25, second Vivien Howson, Margaret Miller and Linda Johnson.
