AN ANONYMOUS benefactor has stepped forward to replace the vandalised memorial to Malton hero Sergeant David Winter.

And another unknown businessman, who knew Sgt Winter, has offered a reward to catch the louts responsible.

Sgt Winter was gunned down in the streets of the town during a killing spree by gunman Barry Prudom 18 years ago.

We told yesterday how a bench dedicated to the officer's memory was smashed to pieces by vandals.

After the story appeared, Malton police were contacted by someone willing to pay for the bench to be replaced.

And in a similar move, a local businessman, who has asked not to be named, is offering a £100 reward for anyone offering information leading to the conviction of whoever damaged the bench.

The businessman, who knew Sergeant Winter personally, said he was appalled by the insult to the brave officer's memory and felt vandalism was getting out of hand in Malton.

"This type of thing should not happen in our town," he said.

"If it helps, I will personally give £100 to anyone offering information leading to the conviction of the vandals," the businessman added.

Inspector Neil Burnett, of Malton police said: "An anonymous beneficiary has come forward and offered to cover the full costs of replacing the bench.

"I have discussed the matter with the Town Council and arrangements are now in hand."

Inspector Burnett stressed it was the town council's bench and not the police's, and said he and his colleagues were "delighted" the offer had been made.

The reward will either be issued by the police or through the Crimestoppers scheme.

Any information can be passed on through Crimestoppers anonymously, by ringing 0800 555 111, or by getting in touch with Malton police on 01653 692424.

The reward could also be collected anonymously through Crimestoppers, but only if the information leads to a conviction.
