FOLLOWING last weekend's disappointing start to the season, anglers competing in the big events on the Ouse this week will be hoping for a change in fortune.
With cooler temperatures following the heatwave, the fish may be more inclined to feed but may not be sufficiently shoaled to provide the usual early season bags.
The Overton Cup uses all sections from Overton Top to Rawcliffe tomorrow where pegs below Church Farm and opposite the Lido will probably be favoured.
The only other booking sees Monkhill visit Park View. The same venue is also out of action on Sunday when Stillingfleet are the guests.
Bishopthorpe and City Arms tackle Redhouse and Poppleton while the Overton stretches play host to Post Office and Earswick. The only other bookings are Cygnet at Donkey Woods and Pudsey at Tadcaster.
The big match on Sunday is the opening round of the CIU Saturday League which utilises all of the Beningbrough stretches.
A few bream were to be had in the middle of the Park last week and I suspect that pegs above the stones are now ready to produce. It will be interesting to note if the small barbel continue to show from pegs below the Tower.
Bream are feeding well below York but anglers are having to rise early. Once the onset of mid-morning heralds the arrival of the boats the fish are reluctant to feed, witness Huntington's opener at Palace Ings where 4-14-0 of skimmers from the end peg was enough for Kevin Watson.
Russ Turpin was second with 4-5-0 and Ian Thornton third with 4-2-0.
Most of the local stillwaters continue to fish well with good catches of small carp at Oaktree and the Oaks.
At Carpvale the hot weather heralded a flurry of surface feeding activity. Popped-up bread is the latest method but floating pellets and mixers will also work.
Pegs 5 and 6 have been the most consistent for the surface feeders with owner Kev Whincup reporting that anglers fishing these pegs in recent days could not fail to get 50lb plus catches.
The Foss Fishing Match for the Bob Hunter Trophy will be staged on Saturday, July 1.
The competition is open to children aged 12 and under and 16 and under. Competitors to meet at 9am with fishing from 10am to 1pm.
