WE are very disturbed by your report (June 12) that David Potter is still unable to be told whether he can return to teach at Upper Poppleton Junior School.
As parents of children, now adult, who were taught by Mr Potter, we have the highest regard for this excellent and dedicated teacher.
While it is right and proper that concerned parents should express their views, it is very disappointing that a motion was passed at the parents' meeting urging the school governors to reject the local education authority's recommendation that Mr Potter be reinstated.
What has happened to the proud tradition enshrined in our laws over many generations, that a person is innocent until proven guilty? As your report made clear, the police spent two months investigating the allegation against Mr Potter, and concluded no further action would be taken.
It is to be hoped the governors will now make it possible for Mr Potter to return to teach at the school he has served so well over many years, bearing in mind that no allegations have ever been made against Mr Potter's conduct while teaching at the school.
If other parents and Poppleton residents feel as we do, we urge them to write to the governors without delay, in view of the fact that they will meet to decide Mr Potter's future on Monday, July 3.
