DON'T forget - today is the day to bring yellow flooding into your life.

The people of York and the surrounding area are being urged to don the brightest hue for Wear Yellow Day in aid of our Hospice 2000 Appeal.

All you have to do to show support for St Leonard Hospice's £2 million fundraising campaign, which is backed by the Evening Press, is to wear any yellow item, or eat something yellow, or use yellow stationery - or whatever takes your fancy.

The day was being backed by local businesses and schools, and York street entertainer Mr Yellow was touring the area to encourage people to take part.

He was visiting York's Mansion House, where he was presenting the Lord Mayor of York, Coun Shan Braund, with sunflowers and a "I'm wearing yellow for the hospice" sticker.

The yellow theme stems from the fact that this is National Sunflower Week, when hospices throughout the country raise funds by giving out silk sunflowers in exchange for donations.

Mr Yellow was also visiting schools and businesses across the city, bringing a touch of brightness wherever he went.

Janet Morley, fundraising manager at the hospice, said: "We have had tremendous support from all around our area for Wear Yellow Day - 17 schools have encouraged their students to go yellow for the day and bring a small contribution for the hospice, and businesses, uniformed organisations and homes for the elderly are also taking part."

Those taking part also included the Grange Hotel, Clifton; the Tesco stores at Askham Bar and Clifton Moor; Crombie Wilkinson Solicitors; York Leisure Services; the Yearsley Bridge Day Centre; Galtres Care Home, Strensall; Lloyds TSB Bank, Acomb; Cellhire plc, Clifton Park; and the 3rd York Girls Brigade.
